It is a simulator station built around the cabin of a single-seat ultralight helicopter, with the three controls of rotary-wing flight (cyclic, collective and pedals) and the scenery projected on a panoramic screen in front of you. You'll find it at Simulation Project in Cinisello Balsamo, north Milan, in the same centre as our Boeing 737-800 simulator.
You don't need to know how to fly: the instructor explains the controls, guides you through the vertical take-off and helps you find the hover, the moment the helicopter stays still in mid-air. It's the hardest and most rewarding part of flying a helicopter.
A plane in flight tends to stay stable on its own. A helicopter doesn't: to keep it still you have to move everything together, all the time.
Tilts the rotor disc and moves the helicopter forwards, backwards and sideways. One millimetre too much and the aircraft drifts away.
Increases or reduces the lift of the blades: it's how you take off vertically, climb, descend and set the skids down.
Control the tail rotor and keep the nose straight. Every time you touch the collective, your feet need to correct.

No. Every session starts with a briefing on the controls and the instructor stays beside you from take-off to landing. No flying experience or licence is required.

Because a helicopter is not stable on its own: to stay still in mid-air (hover) you must constantly coordinate three controls. The cyclic moves the aircraft, the collective adds or removes lift and the pedals keep the nose straight, and every correction on one control needs a correction on the others.
The Boeing 737-800 is an airliner with a 1:1 scale cockpit, a 220° view and crew procedures. The Mosquito is a single-seat ultralight helicopter: the challenge is not procedures but the hands-and-feet coordination of the hover. They are two complementary experiences in the same centre.
